|
With the advent of information technology, telecommunication facilities of the province and the city have improved considerably over the past years.
Two major backbones traversed Cagayan de Oro. The first is PLDT’s 10-gbps Digital Fiber Optic Backbone (DFOB). It connects to five international submarine cable systems in the Asia Pacific and Southeast Asia, and further to North American, Middle East and Western Europe. It is supported by an extensive Digital Microwave Backbone.
The second major backbone is Telicphil’s 10-gbps National Digital Transmission Network -- a 2,762-kilometer fiber optic facility that spans from Cuyapo, Isabela in the North down to Cagayan de Oro. |

As of 2008, the six telephone companies in Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental have acquired 80,042 equipped lines, out of which 56,646 have been installed. The two major carriers -- MISORTEL and PHILCOM-PLDT -- have installed a state-of-the-art digital system that uses Alcatel 12-switch providing interconnected IDD & NDD services.
In 2012, Governor Oscar Moreno mentioned MISORTEL in his State of the Province Addres: "The indebtedness of the Provincial Government with financing institutions for the MISORTEL operations started in 1991. The previous administration has made our internal revenue allotment a collateral to the Municipal Development Fund Office (MDFO) of the Department of Finance for an interest-inclusive loan which by the year 2012, the amount would reach to around PhP159M. The said loan has costed the Provincial Government in payments to around PhP19M annually from 2004 to 2010. For years 2011 and 2012, more than PhP18M is the amount due. We are expecting full payment of this loan this year, by the month of December." [Read more.] |
